FAQ
Plan your visit - what you need to know...
Do I need to book, or can I turn up?
Please book in advance to avoid disappointment. Sessions run every 60 mins during standard opening hours, and there are 8 spaces per session. Online booking closes one hour before the next available session starts.
What do I wear?
Swimwear (not your underwear please!). All of our sauna and ice bath sessions require you to be clothed appropriately. To ensure good hygiene for all, don't forget to bring a towel to sit on in the sauna. If you have forgotten your sauna towel, these are available to hire for £3.
Can I come on my own?
Yes. Come alone. Come with friends. It's up to you. A session accommodates up to 8 guests at a time - if there are spaces available we're happy to welcome you. Live availability is available to view on our website.
Can I drink before or after my session?
We advise you to drink water before, during and after your session. Cold drinking water is available on site, and hot drinks are available in the relaxation suite for your enjoyment after your session. You may bring drinking water in a suitable, reusable container - we recommend a specialised sauna bottle or insulated water bottle or flask. Glass water bottles are not permitted for safety reasons. We advise against heat degrading plastic bottles e.g., single use bottles and protein shakers, as they release chemical fumes into the shared air at high heat. If you don't own a specialised sauna bottle these can be purchased from reception.
Alternatively, follow these tips to keep your insulated bottle or flask safe for use - place your bottle on the floor of the sauna (heat rises), wrap metal bottles in a small towel or flannel to ensure you don't burn your hands or lips when drinking, use a cork bottle sleeve (also available to purchase from reception).
ALCOHOL - Drinking alcohol before a sauna is considered a medical risk and is strongly discouraged. Staff reserve the right the refuse entry to anyone suspected to be under the influence of alcohol.
Can I bring food or drink in?
Food is not permitted. Where do I change and store my things?
Outdoor shoes and coats are not permitted past reception, however there is space to hang coats and store shoes in reception. Once inside, you can use our shower rooms and bathroom to change. There are hanging storage bags available in the corridor for your belongings while you use the facilities. Please note - they are for your convenience rather than safekeeping, so please leave valuables at home.
Is there parking?
Yes, there is ample free parking on site. You can also reach us by bicycle using the dedicated cycle lanes and routes from Truro, Treliske Hospital, Threemilestone and St Agnes (please note - there is no secure bike storage available on site). You may also choose to visit us by bus - the 304 stops at the centre of Trevissome Park just metres from Sekhem Sauna & Recovery.
Can I hire the entire venue for a private group/function?
Yes. You can hire our entire venue exclusively for your group. We can also work with our wellbeing partners to combine your visit with treatments and/or wellbeing classes. Please contact us [email protected] with details of the date, time, number of guests and any specific requirements and we will work with you to design the best experience for your needs.
Sauna Etiquette
How hot does the sauna get?
Average temperatures range from 70- 90°C depending on where you sit in the sauna. For a cooler experience, choose the lower bench. For a more intense experience, sit up high. If you'd like a heat boost, you may use the bucket and ladle provided to pour water onto the stove rocks - however, please ask other occupants if they mind the extra steam before you do so.
How cold is the plunge, and does it warm up as people use it?
We use temperature controlled chillers to ensure our cold plunge baths sit at around 7 degrees and 11 degrees. This is to best suit the varying wellbeing needs of users. If you'd prefer not to sit in the cold plunge you can choose to refresh yourself using the drench shower which you will find alongside the cold plunge baths.
How long am I supposed to stay in the cold?
Our in-house wellbeing guide will advise you how to get the most out of your visit during your first session. However, there are no set rules. At Sekhem Sauna & Recovery, we want you to enjoy your experience, your way.
Do I have to shower before I use the facilities?
Yes! For hygiene purposes, showering is required before entering the sauna or using the cold plunge baths.
Can I shower afterwards?
Yes. You can access hot showers in our changing rooms. You may also use the cold drench shower at the end of your session if you'd prefer.
Am I allowed to pour water on the stones?
Ask the room first and use the ladle (not water from a drinking bottle). One ladle changes the humidity for everyone on the bench, and someone four minutes into their first round may be at their limit already. If nobody objects, one ladle at a time. Please notify a member of staff if the sauna bucket has run out of water and we will replenish it for you.
I am on my period. Is that a problem?
No. If you can control your flow then you are welcome to use the facilities as normal. We ask that you use a tampon or menstrual cup for the plunge, the same as any pool or immersive water facility. Sanitary towels are not suitable for use in the sauna, cold plunge baths or cold drench shower.
I am pregnant. Can I still come?
In the UK, using sauna and cold plunge during pregnancy is not advised. Particularly during the first trimester. If you are pregnant or think you could be pregnant, please always consult your midwife or GP before engaging in any activities involving extreme temperature exposure.
